What is Melatonin & How Does it Work?

Melatonin is made by the pineal gland. It is a hormone found above the center of your brain as a pea-sized gland. It helps your body understand the time to sleep or wake up. At night, your body produces more melatonin. As the sun sets, the levels start going up. With the sun going up, the melatonin production reduces. The light and your body clock set the making of melatonin.

Melatonin supplements are available in different forms of liquids, pills, and chewable. It is found in synthetic or natural forms.

Why Take It?

People take melatonin when there is trouble in falling asleep. Sleeping is a must and when people are unable to get sleep all night, they are troubled. Not getting sleep includes a delayed sleep disorder such that falling asleep early is a problem and getting up is trouble in the morning.

Supplements are taken by people who have odd jobs disturbing the sleep schedules referred to as sleep work disorder. The supplements also help in preventing jet lag, the run-down feeling that some experience while they do across time zones traveling.

The melatonin does not have a harmful side, but does include a few side effects in comparison to other sleep medicines, that you may be having:

  • Daytime sleepiness, stomach discomfort, dizziness, headache, crankiness, anxiety, small-time depression, and heavy head feeling

Melatonin supplements cause problems if you are already taking some medicines, including:

  • Medications for blood-thinning, diabetes drugs, drugs suppressing the immune system, and birth control pills.

It is best to inform your doctor if you are taking supplements or if there is any other health condition that you need medicines. The melatonin natural form may have a virus, so if you wish to take melatonin, ensure to pick a synthetic type.

How Does It Work?

There is a different reaction to supplements and medicines that for some people melatonin may or may not work. it may work for some people experiencing jet lag issues or delayed sleep disorder, or even as shift work disorder. 

However, people with insomnia taking melatonin sleep faster than regular. It also helps you in sleeping better all night, though the time length may vary. 

More studies and research is going on showing melatonin is not helpful for all the sleep issues and it also lacks research confirming that it helps to issues that are not sleep-related.
